Western Power has submitted plans for a new renewable energy transmission line between Malaga and Pinjar for environmental approval following detailed community consultation.
The proposed Clean Energy Link 330 kV double circuit transmission line will connect Western Power’s Northern Terminal in Malaga to Neerabup Terminal in Pinjar and significantly enhance the carrying capacity required for renewable energy and enable the connection of new renewable energy resources from WA’s Mid West region.
Western Power Executive Manager of Energy Transition and Sustainability Matthew Cheney said engagement with key stakeholders had been valuable in reaching this stage of the project.
“We’ve been liaising with Local Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Services, private landowners, local governments and State Government agencies who have provided local insights,” he said.
“The proposed line route follows existing transmission lines and we’ll be using existing easements where possible to limit any social and environmental impacts.”
“The referral to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCCEEW) and the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for environmental approval under a bilateral assessment is an important step towards a cleaner energy future for all.”
“A key part of the referral process is public comment and input and I encourage the community to have their say as we work collectively towards achieving WA’s decarbonisation goals.”
“Our stakeholder and community engagement team will continue to consult over the coming months.”
An assessment decision on the environmental referral is expected to be delivered mid-2025 with proposed construction expected to begin shortly after. The community as a key stakeholder will be kept updated throughout the process.
This Clean Energy Link project is a key part of Western Power’s transmission enhancement preparing the network for renewable energy as WA powers towards net zero.
