We’re dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions and saving energy. One of the ways we do this is by switching traditional streetlights to energy-efficient LED lights. As part of our ongoing infrastructure upgrade, where possible, we are taking the opportunity to replace the standard streetlights with LED lights, which have a longer life cycle and emit far less carbon than average lights.
With every undergrounding project, a new LED street lighting system is designed and installed to the latest Australian Standards. Each project is different, and the positioning of new streetlights is reviewed during the design stage. You’ll find that around 10 per cent more lights are installed because they are positioned more closely and generally alternate from one side of the road to the other. Modern light poles are also designed to collapse if hit by vehicles to reduce injuries and damage.
We estimate that the existing streetlights currently create around 95,000 tonnes of Co2 emissions every year. By switching them through our LED replacement program which includes the ones we replace as part of our undergrounding works, we estimate a reduction of more than 33,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.
We are proud to be making positive changes for the environment and the community. By switching to LED streetlights, we are reducing carbon emissions and saving energy. We’re making smart cities and better environmental and infrastructure outcomes for the community, the local councils who are responsible for the lights and Western Power and the grid. These are exciting new times, and we’re glad to be part of these types of projects where we can make a difference in everyday life for our communities.
