Western Power is undertaking essential maintenance work on the 220kV transmission line between Monday 28 April - Saturday 3 May 2025. To ensure continued power supply to the community, we will be ‘islanding’ Kalgoorlie and surrounding areas while this work is underway.

Islanding is temporarily supplying power to Kalgoorlie and surrounding areas from local generation sources. The network maintenance work has been timed to coincide with the Kalgoorlie Super Pit maintenance shutdown.

Islanding will enable a stable power supply to the community while crews undertake essential maintenance at the Kondinin and Narrogin substations, asset replacement at the Muja substation and upgrades to the 220kV line to improve network resilience. The transition from network to island is seamless and most customers will not notice any change.

During this work, some generators and industry customers may have their power supply constrained. We have notified them in advance so they can prepare.

We’re working closely with the Australian Energy Market Operator, power generators, and industry customers to mitigate the risk of any unplanned disruptions during these essential works. However, it’s important to note that there is always a risk that an issue may arise, resulting in an unplanned outage.

For this reason, we encourage people to be prepared if an unplanned outage would significantly affect them such as ensuring medical equipment, computer and phone batteries are kept charged. During any unplanned outage, we communicate with those affected directly via SMS.

Western Power continues to work with industry and Government on long-term power solutions for the region.
