Advanced Metering Infrastructure
An advanced meter is a digital meter with a communications card that talks to our network, remotely monitoring energy flows.
Advanced meters
They are an important step in unlocking energy opportunities for our customers, like allowing for more new technologies to join the network.
Watch the video to find out how advanced meters work.
We're installing advanced meters in homes across WA. They're an important step in unlocking future energy opportunities for WA households, as well as delivering immediate benefits:
- faults on the service connection are remotely detected, so we can send a crew to investigate and act before an incident occurs;
- meter reading is done remotely and automatically, reducing the need for estimated bills;
- if a property is disconnected, the electricity supply can be remotely reconnected. Traditionally one of our technicians would need to visit the property to reconnect it;
customers can take advantage of emerging technologies like community batteries, microgrids, embedded networks and electric vehicles as well as supporting the increased use of rooftop solar.
Installing advanced meters across WA
We're now installing advanced meters for all new and replacement meters across the network.
By mid-2027 we will have installed over 1,200,000 advanced meters on our network. Most will be installed across the Perth metropolitan area and the regional centres of Albany, Bunbury, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie.

Frequently asked questionsDo I have to pay for an advanced meter? Does it need an internet connection? Our frequently asked questions have it covered. |
What happens when you get an advanced meter?
New homes being built will have an advanced meter and homes with a meter nearing its end of life will have one installed.
If your home is getting an advanced meter, we will let you know in advance.
You don’t need to be home when our technicians come to install it but your power will be off for around thirty minutes.

An extra layer of safety
We harness the data collected by advanced meters to give our customers an extra layer of safety.
If a home has an advanced meter installed, we receive an alert if there are unusual patterns in the electricity flows. This could indicate a possible fault on the service connection to a property.
If we get an alert, we'll send a crew out to investigate to make sure your home’s electrical connection is safe.
