Changes to the embedded generation application process

We have been working to improve the current application and assessment process for small inverter energy systems. The improvements include a new online application form, integrating the Clean Energy Council (CEC) list of approved inverters that meet our requirements removing the need for you to check this manually.

Our streamlined process will result in faster assessment turnarounds while ensuring inverters meet the requirements
up front.

It is important to note that when submitting applications for new inverters, you will only be able to select inverters from
the integrated CEC list.

Further information regarding the changes to the application process will be communicated to industry closer to the
go-live date.

Requirements for grid connected inverters

When connecting PV or energy storage systems to our network, energy system suppliers, inverter suppliers and
electrical contractors must ensure they supply and install inverters that:

  • are compliant with Australian Standard (AS/NZS) 4777.2:2015
  • have active anti-islanding protection tested to and compliant with IEC 62116
  • have the volt-watt power quality mode and be enabled with default settings, as per AS/NZS 4777.2.

Anyone seeking to install a new inverter system needs to check this compliance on the Clean Energy Council (CEC)
approved product website. Applicants must then declare their inverter/s are compliant when seeking connection
approval from us.

Network Integration Guideline and battery requirements

The Network Integration Guideline for Inverter Embedded Generation (IEG) provides network related information for
suitable IEG systems.

The guideline outlines critical requirements and technical limits used in our assessment process, assisting applicants
in:

  • identifying the customer's network connection arrangement
  • determining maximum IEG on the current connection arrangement
  • understanding what types of technologies can be connected (PV, energy storage, other energy sources).

The guideline also provides greater clarity on our requirements for those wanting to adopt solar into their energy mix.

In support of the Network Integration Guideline, we published a document outlining more detailed requirements for
battery systems. This interim battery document assists industry and customers to design suitable energy storage
systems for integration with our Network.
