Rolling up our sleeves for a bloody good cause

Did you know that 1 in 3 Australians will need blood in their lifetime?

But only 1 in 30 Australians donate blood each year.

That’s quite a big discrepancy.

But with good will, community spirit and a little healthy competition, Western Power is helping to meet that demand.

This year, our across multiple locations donated blood as part of the Australian Red Cross ‘Lifeblood’ initiative. A blood donation challenge, Lifeblood (previously known as Red25) is a friendly competition with other companies to work towards securing 25% of Australia’s blood donations.

For the last four years, our employees have taken part in this challenge and the number of donations has been steadily rising year on year. This year’s goal was to achieve 500 blood donations and, thanks to our employees, we exceeded this target!

Jess Carter, Injury Management Specialist, was our 500th blood donor.

"I make blood donations every fortnight. I know that the plasma I donate can be made into eight different types of blood products that help so many people.”

With Australia needing more than 29,000 donations every week, the need for blood donation is constant. The challenge raises awareness of an issue that is always prevalent and we were proud to be a part of this important initiative.

With Christmas soon upon us, now is a perfect time to get into the community spirit and consider donating blood.

As Jess says, “I do it simply because I can. It's always a great thing to do, and especially at this time of year when many donors are going on holidays, if you're thinking of donating now is a great time."

And looking ahead to the new year, are we hoping to exceed our target again in 2020? Absolutely.
