Whether it’s who’s got the best beaches, the better nightlife or the best suburbs to live in – the rivalry between south verses north of the river in Perth has always been a fierce one.
And when it comes to the top performing solar suburbs in WA, the battle lines between north and south have been drawn. So, which suburbs have taken out top honours for solar supremacy in 2019?
As much as they tried to defend it, reigning solar suburbs in the City of Mandurah have been knocked off the top of the list this year by the City of Wanneroo, City of Joondalup and nearby southie neighbour, City of Rockingham.
In the battle between south verses north, south of the river can collectively still lay claim over their northern rivals, but only marginally. It might be a decade in the making, but slowly and surely, the northies might soon pull off the ultimate tortoise and the hare race.
If you purchased solar panels 10 years ago, it would have elevated your status symbol, but today, they’re a rooftop standard for many homes – in particular new housing developments.
Back then there were only 12,000 solar panel installations across all of the Perth metro area. Today, there are over 250,000 residential properties with solar – that’s roughly 1 in 3 homes, and there’s no signs of it slowing down.
When you add the total generation capacity of all the solar panels in Perth, it’s just over 1 gigawatt (1 billion watts) – which is a lot! To put it into perspective, that’s enough energy to power 212 super pits or nearly half a million kettles and hair dryers (two of the most energy-hungry appliances in homes.)
All we need is another 60,000 home solar installations, and we’ll be able to generate the same number of gigawatts that powered the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future. Pretty impressive hey?
Rounding off the top 10 individual solar suburbs this year are:
|2. Canning Vale|
|8. Halls Head|
