Western Power launches summer safety campaign

Western Power has today launched its Make the Safe Call summer safety campaign to remind the community to contact our 24/7 emergency line on 13 13 51 if they see a fallen powerline.

The community safety television advice commenced today, which features Western Power crews responding to a 13 13 51 emergency call after a powerline is damaged during a summer storm.

Western Power’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Italiano said every year Western Australia experiences strong winds and lightning during summer storms that have caused power outages and damage to the network.

“In January last year more than 17,000 Western Power customers experienced outages during a storm which were mainly caused by strong winds blowing branches and debris into powerlines,” Mr Italiano said.

Mr Italiano said that a simple check around your home to ensure branches and trees are at least 2.5 metres away from powerlines can reduce damage and power outages during wild weather.

“If trees on your premises are too close to powerlines, we recommend that you hire a professional tree lopper to have them safely removed,” he said.

Western Power’s operations team works closely with the Bureau of Meteorology year round to prepare for major weather events.

“We use weather forecasts and information from the bureau in our emergency planning and response so that we can dispatch Western Power crews to areas that are impacted by severe weather,” Mr Italiano said.

“During the festive season, our operations team, network response crews and customer service representatives will be working day and night to respond to your calls and to keep the lights on.

“It’s important to remember that if you see a fallen powerline stay well clear, keep others away and call Western Power’s emergency line on 13 13 51.

“Making the safe call to Western Power is the safest and fastest way for our crews to find and fix the hazard, and restore power.”
