Western Power grants to bolster firefighting resources

Western Power is pleased to announce that applications are now open for Western Australian volunteer bush fire brigades to share in $80,000 worth of grants to assist with their preparations for the upcoming bushfire season.

Western Power’s Chief Executive Officer Paul Italiano said we recognise that keeping safe during the bushfire season is a shared responsibility for households, the government and emergency services.

“Western Power’s annual grants program is specifically designed to enable volunteer brigades to purchase equipment that will help keep communities safe,” he said.

“Our frontline response crews work side-by-side with firefighters in emergency situations to make the area safe and restore power during times of crisis and these grants recognise the tremendous effort of the State’s volunteer firefighters who work tirelessly throughout the bushfire season to protect lives and property.”

Mr Italiano said grants had been awarded since 2007 and Western Power had contributed more than $560,000 to help resource our volunteer firefighting services.

“Western Power awarded 26 grants to volunteer bush fire brigades last year that went towards the purchase of essential firefighting equipment including water pumps, respirators, emergency generators and water tanks.”

Mr Italiano said it is important we all prepare year round for bushfire season and Western Power will continue to play our part by removing vegetation near the electricity network, and replacing ageing power poles and powerlines.

“Western Power also supports the Are You Bushfire Ready? community safety campaign which is delivered in partnership with Western Australia’s emergency services agencies,” he said.

Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade funding requests are assessed by a panel including representatives from Western Power, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and the Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades. Applications close on Friday, 29 August 2014.
