Waroona bushfire electricity update - 8 January

Western Power’s thoughts are with the people affected by the fires in the South West.

Our crews are on standby and ready to start rebuilding the electricity network that has been damaged in the Waroona bushfire.

At present Western Power crews cannot access the fire affected areas because the area is still unsafe. Approximately 3900 customers are currently without power because of the bushfire.

Before crews can start safely rebuilding the network, burnt trees and debris in danger of collapsing will need to be cleared. Western Power will continue to work with DFES to make the area safe.

Western Power is expecting significant rebuilding of the network will be required based on the size of the fire zone and the number of assets in the area.

Poles and equipment are being delivered in preparation for the rebuild to restore the electricity supply to our customers as soon as the area is declared safe to do.

Western Power has positioned several Emergency Response Generators in the town of Waroona to supply electricity to services identified by the shire as essential. These include an aged care facility, supermarket and petrol station.

There are some customers in nearby towns and communities who have not been affected by the bushfire but who are without electricity supply. This is a result of damaged electricity infrastructure in the area and it is likely these customers will not have power restored until the network is repaired. We understand that being without power can be frustrating for households and businesses and appreciate their patience as we commence recovery activities.
