New apprentices kick of their Western Power careers

Eight men and four women from across the state, have kicked off their careers in the electricity industry through Western Power’s 2018 apprenticeship intake.

Selected from more than 1,200 applicants, the new employees, who range from 18 – 29, have taken very different paths to get to Western Power but share the same goal of creating a career and being part the changing energy landscape.

Western Power CEO Guy Chalkley said the variety of backgrounds that the apprentices have come from and their commitment to securing an apprenticeship set them above what were fiercely sought after positions.

“We had more than 1,200 applications for these roles, showing how well regarded this opportunity for a Western Power apprenticeship is.” Mr Chalkley said

“This the first day of their working life at Western Power and in the next four years we will invest heavily in the training and education of these men and women so they can enjoy long and safe careers with us”

For 19 year old Liam Cook from Mandurah, today was the culmination of two years of preparation to fulfil his dream of working in the electrical trades. That dream gained momentum last year when he was awarded a Western Power scholarship to study Certificate II in Electrotechnology at TAFE’s Bunbury campus.

“The more I worked through the pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship process at Western Power the quicker I went from ‘this is something I’d like to do’ to ‘this is what I want to do’, Mr Cook said.

“The next few years are going to be pretty intense but I can already see that it will be worth it. There will be a few lifestyle changes for me, especially travelling to Kewdale most days, but I can’t see that slowing me down.”

Of the 12 new apprentices Western Power is welcoming three line workers, four electrical, three cable jointers and two mechanical apprentices.

Training for each four year apprenticeship will be delivered by Power Training Services WA (PTSWA), a Registered Training Organisation and TAFE, combined with on-the-job experience at their respective depots between desk-based training.
