Apprentice Graduation Day

45 work ready apprentices will today graduate as fully qualified Western Power employees, skilled to take up the challenges of an evolving energy landscape.

More than half of this year’s 34 lineworkers and 11 electrotechnology graduates will return to our regional depots to build on their careers, showing our ongoing commitment to regional communities.

Western Power CEO Guy Chalkley said the diversity of backgrounds and passion that the apprentices brought with them is part of the reason they can step seamlessly into the work place.

“We invest an enormous amount of time, expertise and support in to every apprentice that we take on, and we demand the highest levels of commitment from them throughout what is a gruelling theoretical and practical course,” said Mr Chalkley.

“Our workplace is vast and varied so we make sure they’re ready to handle whatever the day presents. Whether that is planned upgrades to the network, integrating new technologies or emergency responses in storms – these graduates know their job and their teams.”

Graduating Kalgoorlie Lineworker Emily Davies, said Western Power’s “best person for the job” philosophy and being able to stay in her local community encouraged her to apply.

“I didn’t originally think about an apprenticeship as a lineworker but after looking in to it and seeing what the guys around Kal were doing I thought, not only can I do it, I want to do it. Now I can,” said Ms Davies.

“I’m certainly not the first female ‘liney’ to graduate and the best thing is I won’t be the last.

“I think that as long as you have the attitude and aptitude to work in a team, in sometimes pretty stressful situations, then you can do this job as well.”

Applications for 15 apprenticeship positions for the 2017 intake have closed, building on the 14 apprentices taken in 2016. Western Power is committed to meeting the State Government’s commitment to local traineeships.
