Network access services

As the only transporter of electricity in the South West of WA, Western Power provides access to its electricity network to allow generators, retailers and consumers to transport electricity from one location to another.

Networks access in Western Australia is via a contractual arrangement between ‘users’ of the network and Western Power, via an access agreement.  A ‘user’ of the network can be a generator, power consumer (or both consumer and generator) or electricity retailer/trader.  However, each must meet the State Government’s contestability criteria and technical and legal requirements before access can be granted.

Western Power’s access agreements are based on its Access Arrangement.

Access for retailers and generators

In Western Australia, power is traded through a wholesale electricity market operated by the Independent Market Operator (IMO).  Retailers can supply customers by entering an access agreement for connection to the power network and buy energy from any generator through the market.

Similarly, generators may enter an access agreement, connect to the power system and sell energy to any retailer via the market.

Western Power requires detailed technical information to be able to assess the impact on the network infrastructure and other users of any new generators and loads connected at the transmission level.  This will be taken into consideration when Western Power makes an Access Offer.

Metering code communications rules

These are the rules setting out how metering information should be communicated.

Retailer and generator portal

Retailers and generators who already have access to the network may have access to the Retailer and Generator Portal, which allows users to conduct much of their business with Western Power online.
