Power demand in the Hocking area continues to climb due to population growth and increased use of electrical appliances such as air conditioners. It is anticipated that by 2016 the capacity of the existing zone substation would not be able to meet the area's continuing load growth.
Western Power has purchased land at 96 Nicholas Road in Wanneroo to establish a new zone substation, to service Hocking and the surrounding area.
Zone substations convert high voltage power to lower voltage electricity for transportation by distribution lines to homes and businesses.
For optimum efficiency, substations need to be located close to homes and businesses they service. Western Power takes great care to minimise the visual and other impacts of its power infrastructure in populated areas. As part of our zone substation site selection, Western Power considers factors such as social, environmental and economic impacts, as well as access to existing and future power infrastructure. The Nicholas Road site was chosen after extensive investigation. The site is well positioned in relation to our existing Mullaloo and Wanneroo zone substations.
Signs indicating Western Power's ownership of the land and intended future use of the site have been erected.
