Banjup / Wandi zone substation

Western Power will be increasing and improving power supply in the Banjup and Wandi community, with a proposed new zone substation on the corner of De Haer and Rowley Roads, Wandi.

The project

Western Power has a recently purchased a property on the corner of Rowley Road and De Haer Road in Wandi, on which we are proposing to construct a 132kV zone substation in the future.

Map of purchased property

The 132kV zone substation, which will be known as the Banjup zone substation, will provide power to the Banjup and Wandi communities. It is required in order to meet rapidly growing power demands in the area, largely due to residential growth and new subdivisions.

Our current forecasts indicate that it will be required by 2020 to provide for future energy needs.

Engaging with the community

Western Power is committed to engaging with the community  so that we can listen to your comments, provide you with the information you are seeking and take your input on how the substation can best be integrated into the existing environment.

On 9 December 2009, we hosted a community session at Wandi Hall. The session was attendeed by 33 people - thank you to everyone who come along. We will be hosting another session in February 2010 to follow up on a number of queries which were raised - details will be provided in the New Year. If you were not at the session, but would like to be involved in future meetings, please contact Lisa on 08 9326 6387 or email lisa.hamblin@westernpower.com.au.

Site selection

A number of sites in the locality were initially considered for the substation, but this option has been identified as most suitable when balancing a number of considerations. These considerations include social, technical, financial and environmental factors. This site is also central to the load area (the area which requires the power) and will easily allow for connection into the existing network.

What is a zone substation?

Zone substations receive high voltage electricity from transmission lines, and convert this electricity to lower voltage for delivery to homes and businesses within a local community. There are over 120 zone substation in the metro area that distribute power to surrounding communities. Some examples are Bibra Lake, Southern River, Cottesloe, Rivervale and Wanneroo.

It is important that zone substations are located close to the people and communities they serve.
