Balcatta substation

Western Power is developing a new substation in Balcatta to meet the need for additional electricity supplies in the area.

The new substation will supply electricity to part of the area that was to be supplied by the proposed Stirling substation in Odin Drive.  As a result of the decision to develop the site at Balcatta Road, there is no longer a need to develop the Odin Drive site.

The substation will be located at 163 Balcatta Road, Balcatta in an industrial area.

The project

On site works are scheduled to commence in early 2010 with construction due to be completed in July 2011.  When construction is complete, Western Power will landscape the area surrounding the substation with vegetation endemic to the area.

What a substation does

The substation receives electricity from transmission lines which are used to carry electricity long distances around the network.  The high voltage electricity carried by transmission lines into the substation is then transformed by equipment in the substation to a lower voltage that can be distributed out to our customers.

As people continue to use more electrical devices for their personal lives, more electricity will be required to power them.  Devices such as air conditioners, large screen televisions, personal computers and other day to day items which rely on electricity to operate require Western Power to create additional electricity infrastructure to meet the increase in the electricity demand.
